Pumping From Dusk to Dawn

Finding the right pumping bra is just part of the world of pumping. There’s also having to wash the parts each and every time. And if you’re a working mom, you’ll have to deal with getting the time and place (hopefully it’s not a closet) to pump without being stressed about work or getting back to work in time. Losing your job is the last thing you need right now. Then there’s the biggie: trying to keep up your supply while being away from your little one.

Every day, I pump at least twice while at work and once or twice at home. Pumping isn’t necessarily easy or comfortable. You have to sit with parts of a machine plugged into you. I know, I’ve spilled a bit of milk a few times from trying to get into a better position. Oh, and like nursing, once you’re plugged in you’re pretty much stuck. So you know that book or glass of water you left in the kitchen…oops.

It’s not easy keeping up supply. With all the pumping I do, I can’t seem to get more than a day or two ahead. Especially now that Sarah is going through a growth spurt. There’s been a few stressful times when I left the sitter with barely enough in the freezer. I literally tried pumping while I was nursing all that morning before work. I didn’t have a pumping bra then, so yeah, not fun! Talk about a milk mess! I’ve finally gotten to where I pump when I get home(Sarah is usually in bed) then I get up around two am, before she wakes up for her nightly feeding, and finally once before I go to work. It’s enabling me to have a little more ahead.

I’ve found myself getting lower on milk supply and that really stressed me out. I finally found a tea called Liquid Gold by Pink Stork. It is the only nursing tea I have found that actually tastes good. Most are bitter and have awful after taste. I don’t even add honey to this one. Each tea bag lasts for three cups so don’t throw it away after one use. I made that mistake once. Oh, and did I mention that it’s loose leaf tea in the bag? Even better, right?!

The other biggie on production is stress. So try not to worry. You might not get as much sleep, but just remember: you are awesome! No one else can do what you do the way you do it, in your circumstances. So keep it up!

The particular pumping bra that I found is Rumina’s Relaxed Nursing Bra. It has built in hands free pumping and while, it doesn’t hold the pumps as tightly as the Simple Wishes pumping bra, but they’ve never come loose. I love this bra because it is so comfortable! I can sleep in it without any discomfort. The simple wishes nursing bra was not nearly as comfortable. It is a breeze to use. I recommend it over any other bra, hands down.
